about

Back in 2002, what began as a simple quest for some lesser known songs by West Coast songwriter Matt Dennis (best known for his hits “Angel Eyes” and “Violets for your Furs”) quickly became an all-out obsession. I began the search at the Library of Congress, then teamed up with Los Angeles singer/songwriter Mark Winkler to present a bi-coastal tribute to Matt Dennis and Bobby Troup. Blues For Breakfast - Remembering Matt Dennis became an award winning third recording, hailed by the press as ”delightfully dramatic” (Jazz Times) “nothing less than a revelation" (Cadence), and “an overdue reminder of the honored place of Matt Dennis in American music” (Jazz Society of Oregon).

"Conklin deserves applause for breathing life into such moribund classics as "Before the Show," "Spring Isn’t Spring Anymore," "Blues for Breakfast," "Let’s Just Pretend," "Learn to Love" and the other songs already cited. The album is worth hearing for them alone, even more so for Conklin’s earnest and caring interpretations. Even for those who thought they knew Matt Dennis, it should be a real eye-opener." Jack Bowers, All About Jazz

"If a singer is very lucky, she finds a songwriter with whom her voice and manner are a neat click. Both thrush and tunesmith benefit. For this intelligent jazz interpreter, it's Matt Dennis and, in particular, Thomas Adair, his most frequent collaborator). She's always been top-notch, but with Dennis, she outdoes herself." David Finkle, Village Voice
